Beyond the wall

A condemned convict named Chester Fay orchestrates a daring prison break with an older inmate, Charley O'Mara, overpowering a guard and escaping in a road-gang truck during a rainstorm; mechanical failure strands them, a pursuit ensues, and Charley is fatally wounded after urging Fay to look after his teenage daughter. Fay keeps his promise, fleeing through countryside, disguising himself as a carpenter, riding freight toward Chicago, and blending into the city's working neighborhoods while evading police.
