A young sailor freshly paid off wanders the Boston wharves in 1813 and is persuaded by an old messmate to join a spirited privateer bound for a year's cruise. The account details the brigantine's polished armament and a comically severe yet merry captain whose rough-sea bearing and sly interrogation welcome the new recruit.
