At Suvla Bay / Being the notes and sketches of scenes, characters and adventures of the Dardanelles campaign, made by John Hargrave ("White Fox") while serving with the 32nd field ambulance, X division, Mediterranean expeditionary force, during the great war.

A first-person memoir records an individual's enlistment and service during an amphibious campaign, offering eyewitness sketches of training, sea voyages, landings and life ashore. It describes camp routine and shortages, tending the wounded, voyages between ports and being marooned on an island, detailed landing operations, sniper encounters, small-unit disorientations, and the eventual retreat and departure. Short poems, local place-words and character sketches are woven with humorous anecdotes and stark observations, producing a varied portrait of daily hardship, camaraderie and the practical, often improvisatory realities of service in an active theatre.
