About This Book
A young girl named Ellen leaves her nursery by means of a white gander and a suspended basket, descending into a cloud country and then into a deep, green forest. She moves through episodic fairy-tale adventures—meeting little dwarfs and domestic folk, talking animals, a great gray wolf, genies, enchanted houses, and a princess—while seeking directions to a peculiar household called the Queerbodies. Through curios encounters she uses curiosity, cleverness, and kindness, trades favors and small magical tokens, faces perilous thresholds, and finally returns home altered by the lessons and gifts gathered on her journey.
