About This Book
The narrator, a solitary young musician who supports himself by teaching, recounts how vague longing and restlessness precede his engagement to Veronika. Their intimacy and his anticipatory happiness are shattered when he discovers her apparently murdered, and grief and disbelief overwhelm him. As the community responds and officials detain him for the inquest, he experiences stupor, accusation, and the ruin of ordinary life. The narrative follows his inner turmoil, the unraveling of domestic hopes, and the legal and emotional consequences of a sudden violent death.
