About This Book
At a secluded Highland mansion by the river Dee an orphaned sixteen-year-old niece grows up amid domestic rituals and the watchful affection of household servants and her uncle. Her gentle routine is disturbed by conflicting courtship: a dashing young farmer whose ardor and impulsiveness both attract and unsettle her, and a considerably older laird whose steady, paternal devotion culminates in an awkward proposal. The story examines social contrasts, youthful uncertainty, and the tensions between romantic longing and conventional expectations in a rural community.
