About This Book
A fragmentary poetic drama follows a young, idealistic poet who endures hunger and neglect while clinging to artistic pride. The first act stages his cramped garret, comic and predatory visitors, and a scheme in which a court buffoon offers money to claim and publish the poet's drama as his own. The second act shows the same soul lifted from despair by a sudden, vague intellectual revelation that renews curiosity and love of science. The author frames the piece as an incomplete sketch, leaving the poet's final reconciliation with life unresolved.
