About This Book
The novel follows Joseph Bindle, a furniture remover, and his household as they cope with wartime strains by taking lodgers and improvising to make ends meet. Episodes show Bindle aiding Mr Hearty's shop advertising, Mrs Bindle's decision to take in a lodger, the unauthorized billeting of soldiers in Lady Knob-Kerrick's drawing room, and Bindle's work as a porter who accidentally sublets one flat to two tenants, producing comic complications. He also intervenes to discourage the Rev. Andrew MacFie's courtship of Millie Hearty. A recurring ensemble of eccentric neighbors supplies humor, misunderstandings, and domestic resolution.
