The narrative follows Johanna, a young woman mourning her father's death while caring for a child and managing a demanding stepmother and household duties. At the family estate, disputes over authority, a betrothal, professional ambitions, medical intrigues, and an equestrian performance complicate relationships; a shipwreck and schemes by physicians further escalate tensions. Successive reversals reveal loyalties and motives, and the plot closes with reconciliations and altered circumstances two years later.
