About This Book
The author contends that the Christian church suffered a prolonged apostasy that made a new divine witness necessary, then develops four theses: the world's need for such a witness; historical causes and evidence of apostasy; scriptural promises of a final restoration; and the claim that Joseph Smith fulfilled that role. Chapters trace persecution, institutional corruption, doctrinal change, prophecy, objections, and the prophet's character, teachings, miracles, and organizational achievements, using historical argument, prophetic interpretation, and appeals to moral testimony to argue for a restored dispensation of the gospel.
