A New Pocket Mouse (Genus Perognathus) from Kansas

The author reports recognition and description of a previously undescribed subspecies of pocket mouse in the genus Perognathus from western Kansas and adjacent regions. He provides a formal diagnosis emphasizing larger size, buff-colored dorsal pelage with reduced black hairs, distinct lateral and postauricular markings, and cranial proportions; compares measurements and character differences with several named subspecies; lists measurements for the type and additional adults; enumerates specimen localities across Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma; proposes a subspecies name honoring Charles Dean Bunker; and notes museum repositories and acknowledgments.
