About This Book
The story follows a young girl, Margery, who, having overeaten bananas, hesitates about joining a friend for blackberrying while a long-serving household employee, Effie, reacts with wounded pride when labeled merely a hired girl. A neighborhood boy challenges Effie's role, prompting Effie to recall offers of a different life and to assert her dignity and history with the family. The narrative balances childlike mischief and gentle social comedy while exploring attitudes toward domestic service, respect, and belonging through brief scenes and humor.
