About This Book
The narrative follows a young man who travels into a mountainous gold-country region and becomes entangled in the contested reality of old Spanish land grants, rival estates, and local hierarchies. After an injury he recuperates at a rural hacienda and grows close to its proud young proprietress while observing the semi-feudal social order around her. Conflicting claims to valuable pasture, outlaw threats, ambushes, and cut communications escalate into armed encounters and daring rescues, forcing characters to choose loyalties, negotiate promises, and confront changing social and legal pressures.
